The Internet and Email For The Over 50s: Creating posters and leaflets with your computer

by Bob Reeves

There are different ways to create posters and leaflets and other publication on your computer. The best way is to use what is called ‘desktop publishing’ software. This is software that is designed specifically for this purpose and has lots of features to make it as easy as possible.

There is a range of desktop publishing software to choose from with one of the most common being Microsoft Publisher. This can be purchased on its own, or you may get it as part of the Microsoft Office suite of software.

One of the main advantages of using this is that it contains a large number of pre-defined layouts to choose from. This includes posters and leaflets as well as a diverse range of other publication templates such as newsletters, calendars, brochures, labels, cards and even web sites. Once you have selected the layout you want to use you can then customise it putting in all of the details you want.

Desktop publishing uses frames which you select the size and position of. You then fill these frames with text, images or photographs to form your poster or leaflet. You can experiment with moving the frames around to get the professional finish that you are looking for before printing it out.
